Hey there, fellow moms! 👋
My kids loved water. Like they would be swimming all day, every day in the summer if that were an option. They have begged for a pool, but the budget is not every going to work with that. So I have had to become creative in having water play available for them. Whether you have a big yard or a small patio, there are plenty of simple, budget-friendly ways to make a splash and beat the heat. Here are some of our favorite ideas, plus links to great blogs that dive deeper into each activity.
1. Classic Sprinkler Fun
You can’t go wrong with a trusty garden sprinkler! Running through the spray is pure joy for toddlers and older kids alike. For extra fun, turn on some upbeat tunes and create your own backyard water park. When my kids were little they LOVED playing in the sprinkler. They thought it was the best thing ever.
Pro tip: Set up a slip ‘n slide nearby for a full day of slippery fun!

2. DIY Water Balloon Games
Water balloons are a timeless favorite. I just hate filling water balloons. I know I am not the only one, so now there are easier ways to fill up a lot of water balloons at once. The link for those is down below. Beyond simple tossing, try these game ideas:
Water Balloon Toss: Partners toss balloons back and forth, stepping further apart each round.
Water Balloon Pinata: Hang balloons from a tree branch and let the kids take turns trying to pop them blindfolded.
Target Practice: Set up buckets or hoops and have kids aim water balloons for points.

3. Backyard Water Table
If you have toddlers or preschoolers, a water table is a must-have. It provides endless sensory play and can be themed with cups, boats, squirt toys, and natural elements like rocks or leaves. My kids used to make their own car wash station and put their small cars through it. They were so creative!

4. Slip ‘n Slide or Inflatable Pools
Slip ‘n slides bring excitement and speed to any backyard. Make sure to lay down a soft tarp underneath for safety and to protect your grass. Another favorite of my son's was a slip n slide. Not super expensive, but lots of fun.
Inflatable pools are perfect for cooling off and can be set up almost anywhere. Add pool noodles, floating toys, or waterproof books for extra engagement.

5. Water Obstacle Course
Combine running, jumping, and splashing with a water obstacle course. Use sprinklers, buckets, slip ‘n slides, and sponges for stations. Time the kids or let them challenge each other in friendly races. Even better, let the kids figure out the setup themselves. Just make sure it's safe.

6. Water Painting
Fill spray bottles or squirt guns with colored water made from water and food coloring. Kids can “paint” fences, sidewalks, and outdoor furniture without the mess of paint! So much fun!!

Use sunscreen liberally and provide shaded rest areas.
Keep hydration on hand with plenty of water.

Outdoor water activities offer the perfect way to combine play, learning, and family bonding. Whether it’s a quick sprinkler run or a whole backyard water park day, the memories you create will be priceless.
